First-Ever Meeting: Argentina vs Benin by the Numbers

Tuesday's friendly carries a statistical distinction all of its own: in more than a century of Argentine football history, the Albiceleste have never faced Benin — until now.

A first in the history books

For all the emotion surrounding Lionel Messi's farewell, the fixture itself carries a quiet piece of history: Argentina and Benin have never met before. Not in a World Cup, not in a qualifier, not even in a friendly. Tuesday night at the Monumental will be the first senior meeting between the two nations.

The Argentine Football Association made the point itself when announcing this window's three friendlies, noting that Argentina had never previously played an official match against either Benin or Burkina Faso. Benin therefore enter the record books of Argentine football in the most dramatic circumstances imaginable — as the opposition for the greatest player's final international.

It is a fitting quirk. Farewells are usually staged against familiar foes, but Messi's last dance comes against a team Argentina have no history with at all — a blank page on which the final chapter will be written.

The numbers Messi brings to the pitch

If the fixture is new, the headline numbers are anything but. Messi will make his 208th appearance for Argentina on Tuesday, extending his national records for caps and goals. The 39-year-old has scored 125 international goals — 21 of them at World Cups — and added a record 68 assists across more than two decades in the shirt.

His final World Cup campaign this summer added the last entries to that ledger: eight goals and four assists as Argentina reached the final in New Jersey, where Spain won 1-0 after extra time. His last competitive international goal came against Egypt in the round of 16.

The honours list needs little rehearsal but deserves one anyway: the 2022 World Cup, Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima, plus the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup where it all began. On Tuesday, every one of those 207 caps funnels into a single evening at the Monumental.

Argentina's form: 11 goals, zero conceded

The numbers from this window suggest Benin are walking into a buzzsaw — albeit one in celebratory mood. Argentina opened with a 4-0 win over Bolivia in Cordoba, young talents Nico Paz and Jose Manuel Lopez among the scorers, then thrashed Burkina Faso 7-0 at the Monumental, with Franco Mastantuono and Gianluca Prestianni scoring their first international goals.

Across their last five matches, Argentina have won four, scored 16 goals and conceded just three. The World Cup run behind them reads like a highlight reel: group-stage wins over Algeria (3-0), Austria (2-0) and Jordan (3-1), then knockout victories against Cape Verde (3-2 after extra time), Egypt (3-2), Switzerland (3-1) and England (2-1) before the final defeat to Spain.

Perhaps most striking of all: Scaloni's new generation produced those 11 goals this week without Messi touching the ball. The farewell group — Messi, De Paul, Lo Celso and Otamendi — now rejoins a squad that has already shown it can score for fun.

Benin by the numbers

Benin arrive as clear underdogs, and the numbers do not flatter them. SuperSport lists the Cheetahs 93rd in the FIFA rankings, and their recent form shows two wins from their last five matches, with six goals scored and eight conceded.

Their road to Buenos Aires has been chaotic off the pitch. This site has already reported on the camp ordeal of hotels and flights that blighted their preparations, and the squad sandwiched this trip between 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers — a September 25 trip to Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou followed by a home date with Mauritania four days later.

Yet underdogs have a way of rising to historic occasions, and no Benin player will ever get a bigger stage than this one: a sold-out Monumental, a global audience, and ninety minutes against the greatest player of all time.

The keeper who grew up watching Messi

For Benin goalkeeper Saturnin Allagbe, the occasion is personal. Speaking to RMC Sport ahead of the friendly, Allagbe made no secret of his admiration: "When you've grown up watching Messi play, finding yourself on the same pitch as him is bound to be a special moment; we never imagined this could happen. He's a legend, the king of world football."

"The idea that he might play his final match against Benin is unimaginable," he continued. "Honestly, experiencing it will be a special moment, the sort you never forget in a career. It's already incredibly moving just to see him on the telly, so to be on the same pitch..."

But the sentiment comes with a professional caveat. "We'll be there to defend our country, the colours of Benin," Allagbe said. "Once the match starts, we'll have to put our emotions aside and stay focused on our objective." If Messi wants a farewell goal, he will have to earn it past a goalkeeper who has dreamed of this moment his whole life.

Kickoff and the 85,000-strong farewell

The match kicks off at 20:00 local time on Tuesday, October 6 at the Estadio Mas Monumental, with close to 85,000 supporters expected — the stadium sold out in under two hours. Members of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families will attend, with Angel Di Maria among those present to witness the passing of the torch.

For Benin, it is the biggest fixture in their history by any measure — a first meeting with one of football's great powers, played out before a worldwide audience that no qualifier could ever deliver. For Argentina, it is the end of the Messi era and the formal beginning of whatever comes next, with a new generation already scoring freely in his absence. And for the statisticians, it is something simpler: meeting number one, the start of a head-to-head record that begins with a farewell.
