BBC Sport’s 15 September article called him Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 caps, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, and an Inter Miami player. Al Jazeera described the Benin game as set to be his 208th appearance. That arithmetic works if he adds no cap before it. He was not selected for Bolivia or Burkina Faso, so the path is clean unless a number was already out of date on 15 September. We will correct the cap count if AFA publishes a different official total. We will not add a goal he has not scored against Benin.

Facts that are often faked

Referee: not announced. Exact kick-off: not announced. Benin starting XI: not announced. Possession and shot counts: they do not exist yet. A “last five form” that includes games dated after today is fake. Weather on the night: not a fact until a forecast is issued for that date. This page would rather be short than padded with those.

One historical note that is fair

Argentina and Benin had not met in a senior match in the material LA NACION and the other reports described. The head-to-head page explains the limit of that claim. After 6 October the fact will change by exactly one match, whatever the score is. The ranking fact may change on 7 October, when FIFA’s next official list is due. Update the table then. Do not backdate it.

Numbers we are deliberately not using

After the game, the new facts are the score, the scorers and the official ranking if FIFA’s 7 October list includes the friendly. Friendly matches do not always carry the same ranking weight as competitive games. Read FIFA’s note on that update instead of assuming the July gap closes overnight. Until that list is published, leave 2nd and 93rd in the table with the date 20 July 2026 beside them. A cleaner graphic is not worth a wrong rank.
