Messi's Last Dance: An Emotional Argentina Farewell Against Benin

Lionel Messi will wear the Argentina shirt for the 208th and final time on Tuesday evening, when the world champions meet Benin in a farewell friendly at a sold-out Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

A farewell two decades in the making

After more than two decades of service, Lionel Messi's international career reaches its final night on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. Argentina's friendly against Benin at the Estadio Monumental has been staged as the captain's official farewell, with kickoff set for 20:00 local time in front of around 85,000 supporters.

Tickets for the occasion sold out in less than two hours, and the Argentine Football Association has built the evening around its greatest-ever player rather than treating the fixture as an ordinary international friendly. Members of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad have been invited to join the celebrations, alongside their families, while a special commemorative jersey has been created for the night.

Messi announced his retirement from international football in August, shortly after Argentina's ill-tempered World Cup final defeat to Spain in New Jersey — a match he left in tears after making little impression. 'I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are great young players coming up who deserve their chance,' the 39-year-old wrote at the time.

Scaloni: 'Messi leaves behind something unequaled'

National coach Lionel Scaloni, the man who built a team around Messi and delivered Argentina's greatest triumphs, paid a moving tribute ahead of the farewell. 'Messi leaves behind something unequaled,' Scaloni said. 'We have to keep playing, but the feeling of having him on the pitch is unique. I’ve never seen anyone else convey what he does on a football field, and that is what we’re going to miss.'

Yet Scaloni, who is in advanced negotiations to renew his contract for another four years, looked beyond the captain with optimism. 'The Argentine national team will endure. We will remain at a high level, I have no doubt about that,' he added, framing Tuesday's friendly as a symbolic passing of the torch rather than an ending.

The numbers behind 208 caps

Messi heads into the Benin friendly with a record 207 appearances, 125 goals and 68 assists for Argentina — the most caps and goals any Albiceleste player has ever produced. The Benin fixture will be cap number 208, and it could also bring a 45th victim: Messi has scored against 44 different national teams, and Benin is not yet on the list.

His international journey began in 2005 and carried some of football's greatest highs alongside its most painful disappointments. After losing the 2014 World Cup final to Germany and suffering several major tournament setbacks, Messi finally achieved his biggest dream by lifting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Copa América titles followed in 2021 and 2024, alongside the Finalissima and an Olympic gold medal from 2008.

Argentina reached a second World Cup final under his captaincy in 2026 but lost to Spain — a defeat that helped shape the retirement decision announced weeks later.

Why Benin, and why it still matters

The choice of opponent raised eyebrows when it was announced — Benin, ranked outside the world's top 80, hardly the glamorous send-off some fans imagined. But the night was never about the opposition. The AFA wanted the farewell on Argentine soil, in front of Argentine supporters, and Benin accepted the invitation.

Benin's players, for their part, have insisted they are not coming to Buenos Aires as extras in someone else's celebration. Goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou told Marca he will try to save anything Messi sends his way, underlining that the Cheetahs intend to compete. It is also the first-ever senior international meeting between the two nations, adding a genuine piece of history to the occasion.

And the football still matters: Messi has scored against 44 different national teams, and Benin is not on the list. One more goal on Tuesday would take his Argentina tally to 126 — and hand him a 45th victim on the night he says goodbye.

The new generation is already showing up

For Argentine supporters asking what comes after Messi, the past week offered compelling evidence. In the first two post-World Cup matches without their captain, Argentina dazzled with resounding victories — 4-0 over Bolivia and 7-0 over Burkina Faso.

Alongside established stars like Emiliano Martínez, Cristian Romero, Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, an exciting wave of new talent has emerged: creative midfielders Nicolás Paz and Franco Mastantuono, and wingers Gianluca Prestianni and Leonel Flores. The Benin friendly gives that generation one more chance to share a pitch with the player they grew up idolising.

Vice-captain Nicolás Otamendi, 38, is also expected to make his final Argentina appearance alongside Messi, while Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso were called up specifically for this one fixture — meaning Tuesday could be a farewell for more than one Albiceleste veteran.

An emotional night beyond the football

AFA president Claudio Tapia confirmed the federation's intent to honour Messi at home. 'We made the decision to invite the best player in the world, the symbol of our national team, our captain, Lionel Andres Messi, so that he can have the farewell he truly deserves on October 6 here in Argentina,' Tapia said.

Among the 2022 champions invited are Ángel Di María — who retired from international football in 2024 — and the squad that delivered Argentina's third star, with their families joining the tribute. The evening is expected to feature video tributes and emotional moments before, during and after the match.

Messi remains under contract with Inter Miami until 2028, though he has admitted he could hang up his boots for good sooner than anticipated following the death of his father Jorge two months ago. On Tuesday night in Buenos Aires, however, the focus belongs to the 208 caps — and to a farewell Argentina has waited decades to stage.
