Messi Returns to the Miami XI as D.C. United Visit Nu Stadium

Lionel Messi said goodbye to Argentina on Tuesday. Tonight, the reigning MLS Cup champions need him to help them say goodbye to a slump, as Inter Miami host D.C. United at Nu Stadium with both sides desperate for points.

An emotional week ends where it always did: on the pitch

Four days ago, Lionel Messi walked off the Estadio Monumental pitch in tears, having scored and assisted twice in a 3-0 farewell win over Benin that closed his 208-cap Argentina career. Tonight, barely 96 hours later, he is expected to be back where his club season demands him most — in Inter Miami's starting eleven, in front of home fans, with a playoff race tightening around the reigning MLS Cup champions.

Multiple previews have Messi projected to lead the attack for Cristian "Kily" González's side against D.C. United, fresh from rejoining his teammates in training after the farewell. The Argentine scored once and provided two assists in his national-team goodbye, and — far from looking drained — he carried his club form into the international window as well: Messi found the net in four straight competitive games for Miami before the break, including the Herons' only goal in the 2-1 defeat at Columbus Crew that preceded the pause.

The timing could hardly be better for Miami. A two-week international break may have been exactly what a stumbling champion needed — and now the best player in their history is back in pink, on home turf, with seven league games left to rescue a regular season that has started to wobble.

Kickoff, venue and how to watch

Inter Miami vs D.C. United kicks off at 7:30 PM ET on Saturday, October 10 at Nu Stadium in Miami — 8:30 PM in Argentina, and 12:30 AM BST on Sunday, October 11 for viewers in the UK. Like every MLS match, it streams live worldwide on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

The atmosphere should be electric. Nu Stadium has been a happy hunting ground even during the slump — Miami have lost just once in their last nine league games there — and a returning Messi, days after an international farewell watched around the world, is as big a box-office draw as the league can offer.

Miami's slump: five games without a win

The numbers behind Miami's dip make uncomfortable reading. A 7-1 thrashing of CF Montréal on August 30 looked like a statement at the time, but what followed was four straight draws — against Atlanta United, Chicago Fire, Nashville and San Diego — and then the 2-1 loss at Columbus. That is five league games without a win, and just one league victory since the start of August.

Kily González's side have dropped 21 points in that period and slipped to third in the Eastern Conference on goal difference, with 46 points from 27 matches — only one point ahead of fourth-placed Chicago Fire. The most frustrating part is how the points have been lost: Miami have dropped eight points at home since August in games they were leading in the second half, and their last three home league matches have all finished 2-2.

There is a margin-for-error calculation behind tonight's game, too: to surpass last season's regular-season points total of 65, the Herons need to win each of their remaining seven outings. A draw tonight would at least stretch their unbeaten run against D.C. United to seven meetings in the league — and given how often this fixture has been decided by a single goal, three points are very much gettable.

D.C. United's playoff chase is running out of road

If Miami are under pressure, D.C. United are closer to desperation. René Weiler's side sit 11th in the Eastern Conference on 30 points, three below the playoff line with eight games remaining, and are in danger of missing the post-season for a seventh successive year.

The Black and Red have won just one of their last nine regular-season games — a 2-1 victory over Columbus Crew — and are winless in their last five away from home. They did show fight last time out, drawing 3-3 at Vancouver Whitecaps with Kimito Nono scoring twice and captain Lucas Bartlett adding the other. Five of their remaining eight games are on the road, so the trip to Miami is not a fixture they can afford to write off.

The big doubt for the visitors is their main weapon: top scorer Tai Baribo, with 14 goals this season, is doubtful because of fitness issues. If the Israeli striker cannot go, D.C. United's already thin attacking resources look thinner still against the league's champions.

Team news and predicted lineups

Messi is available and expected to start after returning from international duty, with Luis Suárez projected to lead the line alongside him. Elsewhere, though, Miami have problems. Ian Fray is a doubt with a groin strain, Mateo Silvetti is nursing a sore shoulder, Tadeo Allende has a knee injury, Israel Boatwright remains a long-term absentee after tearing a cruciate ligament, and Santiago Morales is suspended.

For D.C. United, Baribo's fitness is the headline doubt, while Gabriel Segal is questionable as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury sustained in the summer.

The projected Inter Miami lineup, per the major previews, is a 3-4-3: Rocco Ríos Novo; Gonzalo Luján, Casemiro, Micael; Facundo Mura, Sergio Reguilón; Yannick Bright, Rodrigo De Paul; Dániel Pintér, Luis Suárez, Lionel Messi — with Maximiliano Falcón another option in the back three. D.C. United are expected in a 4-4-2: Sean Johnson; Silvan Hefti, Lucas Bartlett, Kye Rowles, Keisuke Kurokawa; Kimito Nono, Jackson Hopkins, André Dozzell, Hosei Kijima; João Peglow, Nathan Ordaz — though Gabriel Pirani and Baribo remain in contention if fit. These remain predicted lineups; the official elevens land shortly before kickoff.

Head-to-head: Miami have owned this fixture lately

The all-time series has been competitive: 12 meetings, with Inter Miami winning five, D.C. United winning four and three draws. But the recent trend is one-sided — Miami are unbeaten in their last six MLS meetings with D.C., winning the last two by a single goal.

The most recent meeting, on March 7 this year, was a memorable one: Miami won 2-1 away in front of more than 72,000 fans at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium, with Messi and Rodrigo De Paul on the scoresheet. D.C.'s last win in South Florida came back in June 2023, a 2-1 victory in Fort Lauderdale. Weiler, for his part, knows exactly where the danger lies: the D.C. coach has said the key to stopping Miami is not giving Messi space and defending well as a team. Easier said than done, as 21 years of Argentina opponents could confirm.

What a win would mean

For Miami, three points tonight would end the five-game winless run, consolidate third place ahead of Chicago, and send the champions into the final stretch with momentum — and with Messi doing what he has done all season, deciding games. Most previews back the Herons to edge it, typically by a single goal, on the strength of their home record and the returning captain's form.

For D.C. United, anything from Nu Stadium would be a statement: a first away win over a Florida club since 2023, and proof that a playoff push is still alive with eight games to go. But without Baribo at full fitness, and against a Messi side smelling a return to winning ways, the Black and Red know they will need the performance of their season. Kickoff is 7:30 PM ET — and all eyes, once again, are on number 10.
