Haaland Shatters Two Lionel Messi Champions League Records in City's PSG Defeat

Erling Haaland became the youngest and fastest player to reach 60 Champions League goals with a brace against PSG — breaking two records that belonged to Lionel Messi — in a night that also saw Kylian Mbappe take another Messi mark in Rome.

Two Messi records fall in one night at the Etihad

Erling Haaland rewrote Champions League history on Wednesday night, scoring twice for Manchester City against Paris Saint-Germain to become the youngest and fastest player ever to reach 60 goals in the competition. Both records had belonged to Lionel Messi, and both fell within a single evening in Manchester.

The first of Haaland's two strikes, a thumping header in the 53rd minute, carried him to the 60-goal landmark in just his 60th appearance in Europe's premier club competition. Messi, the previous record holder, had needed 80 matches to reach the same figure — a margin of 20 games that underlines the astonishing speed of Haaland's scoring rate.

Haaland also got there at a younger age than the Argentina captain. UEFA confirmed the Norwegian was 26 years and 85 days old when he struck, beating Messi's previous mark by a single day. A second goal in the 75th minute then took his tally to 61 goals in 60 appearances, moving him clear of the milestone entirely.

The irony of the night was that both records were broken in defeat. Manchester City, playing their first home game since being found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations, trailed PSG 3-0 at half-time before Haaland's brace gave them brief hope. Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning European champions, held on to win 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium.

A career built on breaking speed records

The two new marks fit a pattern: Haaland now owns the record for being the fastest to every major scoring milestone in Champions League history. He arrived at Wednesday's match on 59 goals in 59 appearances, meaning a single strike was enough to erase Messi's fastest-to-60 record.

Before facing PSG, Haaland already held the quickest times to 20, 30, 40 and 50 Champions League goals, reaching those figures in 14, 25, 35 and 49 matches respectively. The latest landmark makes him the seventh player to reach 60 goals in the competition, and he has done it ahead of Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Raul in terms of speed.

Haaland's remarkable scoring record spans three clubs: RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City. His strikes helped City lift the Champions League in the 2022/23 season, when 12 goals in 11 matches powered the club to its first European Cup, including five in a 7-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig.

He also etched his name into Manchester City's own history books on the night. His goals took him to 38 in 41 Champions League appearances for the club, moving past Sergio Aguero to become City's all-time leading scorer in the competition.

Defeat on the night as PSG spoil the party

For all the personal glory, Haaland ended the evening on the losing side. PSG produced a blistering first half at the Etihad, with Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha all on the scoresheet to hand Luis Enrique's side a commanding 3-0 lead at the interval.

Haaland gave City some hope early in the second period, heading home a cross from Iliman Ndiaye to pull a goal back. But PSG restored their three-goal advantage just past the hour through Maghnes Akliouche, whose strike from distance beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Haaland's second of the night in the 75th minute made it 4-2 and set up a frantic finish, but the visitors held firm. The defeat ended City's 100 per cent start to the league phase, which had begun with a 2-0 win over Porto last month, and left Pep Guardiola's side to regroup.

Although City have not gone further than the quarter-finals in the three years since their 2023 triumph, there has been no let-up in Haaland's goalscoring — and Europe's defences are running out of ways to stop him.

Mbappe takes another Messi mark in Rome

Haaland was not the only player to erase a Messi record on Wednesday. In Rome, Kylian Mbappe became the youngest player to reach 100 Champions League appearances, arriving at the century mark at age 27 in Real Madrid's match against Roma.

Messi had set the previous record at age 28 against Roma in September 2015. Mbappe celebrated the milestone by scoring a first-half equaliser as Madrid won a thriller 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico under coach Jose Mourinho.

The France captain's strike was his 72nd Champions League goal, moving him ahead of former Madrid player Raul Gonzalez into fifth place on the competition's career scoring list. It also underlined his blistering start to the season — Mbappe led the Champions League scoring chart last season with 15 goals, including the second-fastest hat-trick in competition history when he netted three goals in six minutes and 42 seconds against Olympiacos.

What it means for Messi's European legacy

For Messi supporters, the night will sting. The fastest-to-60 record was one of the most remarkable statistical feats of his career, set across an era in which he and Ronaldo traded scoring milestones almost season by season. To see it fall — and so dramatically, 20 matches sooner — is a reminder that the game's scoring frontiers keep moving.

Yet context matters. Messi's Champions League legacy extends far beyond one landmark: four winners' medals, a record eight hat-tricks in the competition, and the all-time single-season scoring record of 14 goals. Haaland himself is still building his trophy cabinet in Europe's top competition, with City's 2023 triumph his only title to date.

For now, the numbers belong to the Norwegian. Whether he can sustain this pace across a career — and whether he can match the medals as well as the milestones — is the question that will define the next chapter of the Champions League scoring race.
