Messi's Farewell Night: Concert, Drones and a Monumental Send-Off

Argentina prepared far more than a football match for Messi's farewell: reports describe a pre-match concert, a drone show and pyrotechnics, with an official ceremony honouring the captain after his 208th cap.

More than a friendly

Tonight's Argentina vs Benin match at Estadio Más Monumental was conceived as a farewell, not a fixture, and the Argentine Football Association has built the evening accordingly. Reports from Argentina describe a programme that stretches well beyond the ninety minutes: music before and during the game, a choreographed finale after it, and an official ceremony dedicated entirely to the captain.

AFA deliberately framed this October window around one objective. After Messi announced his international retirement on 31 August, federation president Claudio Tapia said the Benin friendly existed so that the captain could receive "the farewell he truly deserves" in front of his own people. With that in mind, Argentine media reports describe one of the most elaborate send-offs a footballer has ever received — with some details kept private to preserve surprises for Messi himself.

What makes the planning unusual is its ambition: nothing about the evening resembles a routine October friendly, and nobody involved is pretending otherwise. From the concert gates to the final drone, every element is designed to give 85,000 people the goodbye they have been rehearsing in their heads for years.

Before kick-off: concert and a sold-out Monumental

According to reports, the build-up features a two-hour concert with Argentine stars performing ahead of the 20:00 kick-off, turning the hours before the match into a celebration of its own. Football fans in Buenos Aires needed no persuading to arrive early: more than 85,000 tickets were reportedly purchased within two hours of going on sale, TNT Sports Argentina reported.

Appropriately, the stage for it all is South America's largest stadium. South America's largest stadium supplies the perfect symmetry for it: the ground where the home crowd once doubted him is where it will now sing for him, hosting a first senior meeting between Argentina and Benin that will be remembered for everything around the football as much as the football itself. Even the journey into the city has joined the celebration: adidas installed a 30-metre-long version of the farewell shirt in Rosario, Messi's hometown.

Earlier in the window, Argentina warmed up for the occasion without him, beating Bolivia 4-0 in Córdoba and Burkina Faso 7-0 in Buenos Aires. Against Benin, the past returns for one night only.

Half-time and after: drones, pyro and light

Reports say the spectacle continues once the players leave the pitch. Music is planned for the half-time interval, and the post-match finale is described as including a drone show, banner displays, pyrotechnics and light effects, closing with a musical surprise for the crowd and the captain.

An emotional video celebrating Messi's 21 years with the national team is also expected to be shown inside the stadium during the evening, according to Argentine media — fitting for a night when the retiring captain has already been speaking to the fans through the screen.

The official ceremony

After the final whistle, the formal farewell begins. Messi is expected to receive a commemorative plaque and a special jersey honouring his international career, and reports say AFA president Claudio Tapia and CONMEBOL chief Alejandro Domínguez will present him with gifts.

Symbolically, the night closes a circle that took far too long to close. No farewell existed in 2014 after the World Cup final defeat, nor in 2016 when he briefly walked away, nor even immediately after the 2022 triumph in Qatar. Twenty-one years after his debut against Hungary, the federation is determined to get the ending right — 208 caps, 125 goals and 68 assists later.

For Tapia and the AFA leadership, tonight repairs an old debt. Messi’s international story was never supposed to end in a quiet friendly; it was supposed to end with the country wrapped around him. Between the plaque, the jersey, the video and the gifts, the federation is layering every honour it can onto one evening — because after 208 caps there will not be another chance.

The guest list

Nearly all of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families were invited to accompany Messi on his final night, including veterans of the Doha triumph such as Ángel Di María, retired from internationals since 2024. Coach Lionel Scaloni — who told reporters the evening would be "unforgettable for everyone" — will watch the armband pass to Cristian Romero, with Emiliano Martínez and Lautaro Martínez next in the captaincy order.

Not everyone could make it. Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina were blocked from travelling by Roma, and Leandro Paredes — serving a ten-match FIFA suspension handed down after the 2026 World Cup final — was expected to attend from the stands. Rodrigo De Paul, Giovani Lo Celso and Nicolás Otamendi were called up for the night itself, and may also be playing their final games for Argentina.

Scaloni has already framed the task ahead in plain terms: "Collectively, we will try to fill the void left by Leo." From Wednesday, that task begins in earnest.

Among the invitees, one name carries particular weight. Di María shared Messi’s longest road — from the 2008 Olympic gold through the defeats of 2014, 2015 and 2016 to the glories of 2021, 2022 and 2024. His presence in the stands turns the night into a reunion of the generation that finally broke Argentina’s 28-year trophy drought.

A send-off 21 years in the making

Benin — the 89th-ranked Cheetahs under Gernot Rohr — arrive as the first nation ever to face Argentina on this kind of night. Over the coming days the football world will count the goals and the caps, but inside the Monumental tonight, the football is almost incidental.

When the lights go down and the drones rise over Núñez, one of football's longest relationships ends where it matured: in front of his own people, in peace, with the shirt on his back. As the evening's own video message put it: thank you for loving him so much.
